Traveling with Your Dogfrom US to United Arab Emirates
Flying from the US to the UAE with your dog? Here's everything you need to ensure a smooth journey.
Basic Requirements
- β’ Your dog must have a microchip that can be read by a universal scanner
- β’ Required vaccinations:
- β’ Rabies
β’ Your dog needs to be at least 12 weeks old to be vaccinated
β’ Must be given at least 21 days before travel
β’ Must be valid for the entire stay in the UAE - β’ Canine Distemper Virus (CDV)
- β’ Canine Parvovirus
- β’ Infectious Canine Hepatitis
- β’ Leptospirosis
Can be replaced with a lab test if vaccination not available in the US
- β’ Rabies
- β’ USDA endorsed health certificate issued by a USDA-accredited veterinarian
Including a microchip number, description of your dog, and vaccination details (vaccine name, manufacturer, batch number, date) - β’ Parasite treatment for both internal and external parasites
β’ Must be administered within 14 days before travel - β’ Obtain UAE Import Permit from UAE Ministry of Climate Change and Environment before travel
Required Documentation
- β’ USDA endorsed health certificate including:
- β’ Microchip number and date of implantation
- β’ Complete description of dog (species, breed, color, sex, age/date of birth, distinguishing marks)
- β’ All vaccination records including:
- β’ Rabies vaccination
- β’ Canine Distemper Virus (CDV)
- β’ Canine Parvovirus
- β’ Infectious Canine Hepatitis
- β’ Leptospirosis (or lab test results)
- β’ Treatment against internal and external parasites
- β’ UAE Import Permit
Processing typically takes 3-5 business days. The permit is valid for 90 days.
Important Notes
- β’ Bring originals of all documents; photocopies are not accepted
- β’ Maximum of 2 pets per person per year are allowed for import from the US
Timeline & Planning
- 1. Get permanent microchip implanted
Required for identification and must be done before vaccinations - 2. Complete required vaccinations
Including rabies, distemper, parvovirus, hepatitis, and leptospirosis - 3. Wait minimum 21 days after rabies vaccination
Required waiting period before travel is permitted - 4. Apply for UAE import permit
Process electronically through UAE Ministry portal - 5. Administer parasite treatments
Must be done within 14 days before travel - 6. Obtain USDA-endorsed health certificate
Must include all vaccination records and treatments - 7. Book approved travel arrangements
Must comply with IATA regulations and direct flight requirements
Special Requirements for Young Dogs
Important: Puppies under 15 weeks old are not permitted entry into the UAE from the US
Restricted Dog Breeds
Important: The following dog breeds are not permitted entry into the UAE

- β’ American Pit Bull Terrier
- β’ American Staffordshire Terrier
- β’ American Bully
- β’ Brazilian Mastiff (Fila Brasiliero)
- β’ Argentinian Mastiff (Dogo Argentino)
- β’ Tibetan Mastiff
- β’ Neapolitan Mastiff
- β’ French Mastiff (Dogue de Bordeaux)
- β’ Boerboel
- β’ Bullmastiff
- β’ Cane Corso (Italian Mastiff)
- β’ Bully Kutta (Alangu Mastiff, Indian Mastiff)
- β’ Perro De Presa Canario (Canary Mastiff)
- β’ Japanese Tosa
- β’ Presa Canario
Exceptions may be made for service animals, emotional support animals, or dogs used for medical purposes, subject to regulatory requirements.
